An Alaskan cruise has always been on my bucket list as it promises breathtaking scenery, incredible wildlife encounters, and unforgettable experiences. Let me answer the top 10 FAQs about an Alaskan cruise to help you plan your dream voyage to the Last Frontier.
When to Go:
The tourist season for Alaskan cruises is from May to September, with the peak season being June to August. I had the opportunity to go in early July, and it was truly a magical time. The weather was perfect, with mild temperatures and long daylight hours. Also, it was dry! Alaska gets over 200 days of rain a year and we managed to have 7 dry days in a row; I feel incredibly lucky to have managed a dry trip. The crowds were manageable, allowing us to fully enjoy the attractions without feeling overwhelmed. However, if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, the shoulder seasons of May and September offer smaller crowds and the possibility of witnessing the mesmerizing Northern Lights. Keep in mind that the later in the season you go, the higher the chance of rain.
Ports of Call
During my Alaskan cruise, we had the chance to visit Ketchikan, Skagway, and Juneau. Each port had its own unique charm and attractions. In Ketchikan, we explored the quaint town and enjoyed the local shops and boutiques. I highly recommend trying the fresh seafood and salmon dishes available in the local restaurants. Skagway, with its rich gold rush history, was a fascinating town to explore. The top excursion in Skagway is to take a scenic train ride through the White Pass Summit, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. In Juneau, the state capital, we were in awe of the stunning Mendenhall Glacier. If you get a chance to get up close to a glacier I highly recommend, otherwise it’s hard to comprehend the size.
What to Wear
When packing for an Alaskan cruise, it’s important to be prepared for varying weather conditions. Layering is key, as the temperatures can greatly change throughout the day, starting in the 50s and ending in the 80s. I recommend bringing a waterproof jacket, tshirts and sweaters to layer, and comfortable walking shoes. Don’t forget to pack essentials like sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself. And of course, binoculars are a must to enhance your wildlife spotting opportunities. You can see my Alaskan packing list here or watch my packing video to see examples.
Excursions
Shore excursions are a highlight of any cruise, offering unique experiences and opportunities to immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the region, but they are a necessity for an Alaskan cruise to have the best chance to see unique landscapes and wildlife. One excursion that stood out for me was a seaplane ride to Taku Lodge in Juneau. Flying over the stunning landscapes and landing in a remote lodge surrounded by nature was an unforgettable experience. We enjoyed a delicious salmon feast and had the chance to explore the area on foot, taking in the beauty of the wilderness. In Skagway, our excursion, a sleddog ride on a glacier, was canceled due to fog over the mountains. However, we had a fun time exploring the town and trying some local food and drinks. It’s important to book your excursions in advance to secure your spot, as they can fill up quickly, especially for popular activities like glacier hikes and wildlife cruises.
Gear and Equipment
To enhance your Alaskan cruise experience, I highly recommend bringing binoculars for each person in your party. They allowed us to spot wildlife from the ship and during our excursions, including eagles soaring overhead and whales breaching in the distance. Additionally, having a camera with a high-powered zoom lens was a game-changer. We were able to capture stunning close-up shots of glaciers, wildlife, and the beautiful landscapes. Cell phone cameras have come along way, so test your device out before shelling out big bucks on a DSLR.
Costs
The cost of an Alaskan cruise can vary depending on various factors such as the cruise line, cabin type, excursions, and the time of year you choose to travel. It’s important to set a budget and prioritize what experiences are most important to you. Keep in mind that prices can be higher during the peak season compared to the shoulder seasons. During my cruise, we splurged on a balcony cabin, and it was well worth it. We spent hours on our balcony, taking in the stunning views of glaciers and wildlife. However, if you’re someone who prefers to spend more time exploring the ship and participating in onboard activities, a balcony cabin may not be as necessary. A general ball park figure is between $4,000-$10,000 and I break down the costs for us in my youtube video. Don’t forget to budget excursions, flights, and hotel for the night before into the trip cost.
Cruise Line Options
There are several reputable cruise lines that offer Alaskan itineraries, each with its own unique offerings. During my Alaskan cruise, we traveled with Celebrity Cruises and had a fantastic experience. The atmosphere onboard was luxurious and upscale, with a focus on relaxation and enjoying the stunning surroundings. However, if you’re traveling with children, there are more family-friendly cruise lines like Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean that offer a wide range of activities and amenities for kids of all ages. Often Princess and Carnival cruises are the most affordable. It’s important to research and compare the offerings of each cruise line to find the one that suits your unique preferences and travel companions.
The Sights
The natural beauty of Alaska is truly awe-inspiring. From towering glaciers to snow-capped mountains and pristine fjords, every moment on an Alaskan cruise offers breathtaking views. I was constantly in awe of the landscapes that unfolded before my eyes. The only landscaspe I have seen, so far in my life, that holds a candle to the beauty is, Ireland. The combination of stunning scenery and abundant wildlife, including eagles, whales, and bears, makes Alaska a truly remarkable destination. Be sure to have your camera ready at all times, as you never know when you’ll encounter a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Conclusion
Embarking on an Alaskan cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that will leave you with memories to cherish forever. Whether you’re captivated by the stunning landscapes, fascinated by the wildlife, or eager to explore charming Alaskan towns, this journey promises to be an unforgettable experience. I will definitely be visiting Alaska again, and hopeful have even more time to explore the Last Frontier. Happy cruising!
